‘Virtual communication helps corporate houses reduce cost’

Rourkela: With introduction of virtual communication for different requirements, corporate houses have minimized their cost, said Prof. J Chakraborty of IIT-Kharagpur. Speaking at a national-level seminar on ‘Virtual Communication- An emerging trend and its Impact on pedagogy’ held at Padmanava College of Engineering (PCE), here yesterday, the professor of IIT-Kharagpur also observed that with different modes of communication, the target of achieving maximum output by minimizing the cost has leveraged profit earning sectors. Virtual meetings, webinars, e-discussions, video conferencing, etc. are some of the regular events in the corporate houses. Unclean surroundings trigger dengue fear in Steel City

Rourkela: Dengue has reared its ugly head in the Steel City after detection of several cases. This has triggered fear of its spread among the denizens even as the civic body authority allegedly is not alarmed over the problem. To add to the problem, choked drains, garbage littered streets and pools of stagnant water in the city have become the breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Meanwhile, seven cases of dengue have been confirmed out of 30 suspected cases, blood samples of which were sent to VSS Medical College and Hospital at Burla. Appearance of vector-borne disease is blamed on lack of sanitation work and cleanliness drive. Residents allege that all this is happening due to maladministration and unionism among workers engaged in sanitation work. Though as many as 419 regular and casual scavengers have been engaged in 24 out of 33 wards, cleaning drive has not been up to mark. Jethwa leaves for UK

Rourkela: Y K Jethwa, IGP (Western Range) is leaving Rourkela on a study tour for one year. He is going to the UK to pursue PhD in Criminology at Cambridge University. He has handed over his charge to IGP, Northern Range. Police officers and staff in the presence of SP Rourkela and SP Sundargarh bade farewell to Jethwa at the Rourkela Police Headquarters yesterday. Jethwa, a 1994 batch IPS officer, was recently promoted from DIGP (Western Range) to IGP (Western Range). On this occasion, SP Rourkela Himanshu Lal, SP Sundargarh Sanjeev Arora, other senior officers and staffs felicitated Jethwa. Jethwa also attended a felicitation ceremony organized by Rourkela Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) in the evening. 

5-day drama fest kickstarts

Rourkela: In an effort to give fillip to the dying art of drama, Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi (OSNA) in association with Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is organizing a five-day state-level Odia Theatre Festival in the Steel City which will continue till September 30. Minister of State, Transport and Commerce, Subrat Tarai, inaugurated the festival last evening at Civic Centre here. Tarai recalled a time when drama once was popular and nowadays it is losing its importance. He stressed the need for organizing such festival. The event was presided by Dr. Sarat Pujari, President, Odisha Sangeet Natak Academy and eminent Theatre and Cine personality, Odisha, said drama plays a real picture on stage and to act it and to be a character in a play requires dedication and hard work. Staff crunch affecting functioning of RIC

Rourkela: Severe staff crunch has affected the working of the Regional Industries Centre (RIC), Rourkela which has a large number of industrial hubs under its jurisdiction. According to reports, all three sanctioned posts of Functional Managers are vacant while one of three posts of Assistant Managers is also lying vacant. Besides, two of the eight posts of Industrial Promotion Officers (IPOs) and one post each of senior and junior clerks are also lying vacant. Three of the IPOs posted at block headquarters of Lathikata, Bisra, Koira, Bonai and Kuarmunda are holding additional charges for blocks where the posts of IPOs are vacant. The RIC at Rourkela plays a vital role in the industrial development of Odisha because of its role as a co-ordinator between the Government departments and industries. Though there has been an increase in the number of industries under RIC, Rourkela, some industries have closed down or forced to close down for one reason or the other.

BJP stages demo over Coalgate

Rourkela: Hundreds of BJP activists led by its district unit president Dhiren Senapati today staged demonstration in protest against the coal block allocation issue, seeking resignation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Shouting anti-UPA slogans, the saffron party workers demonstrated outside the ADM office here. The BJP leader alleged that involvement of Prime Minister in Coalgate has hampered development of the country. The protesters submitted a memorandum, addressed to the President of India, to the ADM. Senapati alleged that Congress at the Centre is involved in various scams like Commonwealth Games (Rs. 76,000 crore embezzlement) and 2-G spectrum (Rs. 1, 78,000 lakh crore). Quoting the CAG’s report, the coal block scam to the tune of Rs. 1, 86,000 crore has left its impact on common people.
