Odisha shares zero per cent on organ donation: Experts

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar Bhubaneswar: “Organ donation can save lives in our country but it is a sorry state on its statistical point of view that Odisha shares zero per cent on organ donation,” said the experts in an awareness programme organized by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here on Tuesday on the occasion of Organ Donation Day. According to the latest Survey on Organ Transplantation and Body Donation, Odisha shares zero per cent on organ donations whereas Maharastra shares 24 per cent in it ranking highest in the country followed by Karnataka (14 per cent), Delhi (11 %), Tamil Nadu (9 %), Gujarat (6 %), Uttar Pradesh (6%), Andra Pradesh (6%), West Bengal (5%), Haryana (5%) and Kerela (3%). Vedvyas, a sought-after place for funeral rites

Rourkela: Vedvyas, located on the confluence of the rivers Shankh, Koel and Saraswati, is turning out to be a huge tourist draw with people from various parts of the state making a beeline for organizing funeral rites as they consider the place as a holy one. Set against a picture-postcard natural beauty, Vedvyas is being linked to religious sanctity as the place is fabled in The Mahabharata . The popular belief is that it was the place where great sage Vyas Dev wrote the great epic. Surrounded by dense forest, the place is also thronged by people preferring marriage celebrations, thread ceremonies and other rituals. In the 20 th century under the dynamic leadership of late Biju Pattanaik, the then Chief Minister of Odisha is the founder father of Paradip Port whose contribution made our State to hold its maritime glory in the pages of history. Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru the then Prime Minister of India laid the foundation stone of the Port on 3rd January 1962 near the Confluence of river Mahanadi and Bay of Bengal. Government of India took over the management of the Port from the Government of Orissa on 1st June 1965 and declared Paradip as the Eighth Major Port of India on 18th April 1966 making it the first Major Port to be built on the East Coast of India after independence. The first berth to be constructed at the port was for handling iron ore exports. The Port was opened to Traffic on 12th March 1966.
