Rourkela: On the invitation of Rourkela Intellectual Forum (RIF), political leaders, social activists and intellectuals deliberated on various development issues in the Steel City at the Cultural Academy here last evening. Initiating the discussion, Forum Secretary Rabi Kanungo spoke about various development issues of Rourkela. He also placed other development issues including a full-fledged airport, construction of second bridge over river Brahmani, round-the-clock functioning of Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) head office from here, more number of trains services to and from Rourkela, expediting Talcher- Bimlagarh rail line, converting Rourkela Municipality to Municipal Corporation, construction of new roads, planting more trees in and around the Steel City. “I want to see NIT, Rourkela as a global brand”

Prof. Sunil Kumar Sarangi is the first director of National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela, earlier known as Regional Engineering College (REC). Prof. Sarangi was educated at Ravenshaw College. After studying Mechanical Engineering at IIT, Kharagpur, he joined the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1971 and was awarded PhD in Radiation Heat Transfer. In 1977, he joined Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad after a brief stint at the PRL, he joined IIT Kharagpur as a faculty. His areas of interest are cryogenic Processes and Equipment, Heat Exchanger and Expansion machines. He was a professor and head of Cryogenic Department for a long time before joining as the NIT, Rourkela director.   Prof. Sarangi is well known for his scholarly contribution and for his able administration. Five rescued inmates absconding

Rourkela: At least five out of 20 inmates sent to Vedbyas Gurukula Ashram after being rescued from Sarba Bhautik Anath Sishu Ashram, are allegedly absconding. Further two of them who had left for home have not reached yet. Parents of these orphans today demonstrated outside the ADM office. It may be recalled that the district administration had rescued 84 inmates from Anath Sishu Ashram following allegation of sexual harassment to girls. They were sent to different child care centres in the district. The agitating parents blamed the absconding of their children on the negligence in care. They demanded that the administration should not seal the Sarba Bhautik Anath Sishu Ashram and bring all inmates to this ashram. They also accused the administration of playing a dirty politics in this matter. They also submitted a memorandum to ADM in this connection.  

9 RSP workers seriously injured as slab collapses

Rourkela: At least nine contractual workers of Rourkela Steel Plant were today seriously injured in an accident in its premises. The condition of one of them is stated to be critical. The mishap occurred at 11 pm night when the slab of the cooling tower the workers were working on came crashing down. This is what Gurwa Munda (32), one of the injured, stated. They were working 36 ft above the ground. “Though a creaking sound gave hint of something bad going to happen, they could not escape the fall,” another injured said. The condition of Jahrutika is critical and he is admitted to ICU. All the injured are undergoing treatment at Ispat General Hospital (IGH) Rourkela. The contractual workers’ union demanded an inquiry to this incident and stern actions against the officers in-charge.
