Jamir appointed Odisha Governor

Rourkela: The Rashtrapati Bhavan today issued a notification regarding appointment of the five-time Nagaland chief minister and veteran Congress leader Senayangba Chubatoshi Jamir as new Governor of Odisha. He will replace incumbent Governor Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare, whose tenure has already completed since August 20 last year. The veteran Congress leader had earlier served as Governor of Maharashtra and Goa. He was also chief minister of Nagaland five times­­­­­­­­­­­- 1980, 1982-1986, 1993-1997, and 1997-2003. According to sources, Jamir has been informed about his appointment. His appointment as Governor of Odisha will be the third gubernatorial assignment.

Women are mentally stronger than men: CEO, RSP

Rourkela:   “Women are psychologically, sentimentally and emotionally stronger than men,” said G S Prasad, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) while addressing a grand function to celebrate the International Women’s Day organised at Gopabandhu Auditorium here yesterday. Prasad dwelt upon the status of women in Indian society down the ages and how courageous and intelligent women had changed the course of history. Expressing happiness over the significant progress of women in the 21st century, the RSP CEO exhorted women to believe in themselves. “Society should not treat women as victims and rather view them as fighters who can take any challenge headlong and overcome it,” he added. Former Odisha Ranji captain Harmohan Praharaj passes away

Rourkela: Former captain of Odisha Ranji Cricket Team Harmohan Bhawanishankar Praharaj died of cardiac arrest last evening at Ispat General Hospital (IGH). He was 55 and is survived by his wife, a son and a married daughter. He was suffering from Jaundice and cardiac problems. Harmohan was working as Assistant Manager (Sports) in Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP). A right-arm medium pacer and an all-rounder, Praharaj started his 14-year long first-class career in 1978, took 108 wickets playing 42 matches. One 10-wicket haul and six times 5-wicket hauls are his achievements. As a right-handed batsman, he had scored 1372 runs in his first-Class cricketing career with one century and three half-centuries. Rourkela: A host of functions marked International Women’s Day celebration across Sundargarh district. Meetings, seminars, debates, competitions and cultural programmes were organized to mark the Day on which there was a clarion call for concerted efforts for women empowerment, apart from protecting their rights and dignity in society. Incomplete fly over adds to woes of commuters

Rourkela: In the absence of a fly-over, a population of over 80,000 residing in Basanti Colony, Daily Market and Uditnagar area are facing a lot of inconveniences in daily commuting. Now they largely depend upon the level-crossing route while going to different destinations besides official and marketing purposes. Locals say if the fly-over over the railway level-crossing at Basanti Colony lying incomplete is completed, it will ease traffic congestion to a large extent. Most of the time, the level crossing gate remain closed when trains pass off, leaving the commuters in traffic snarl-ups. As the Rourkela railway station is 3 km from the level crossing, most of the time people get stuck in traffic jam after shutdown of the level crossing gate, informed Bulu Mohanty, Councilor of Basanti Colony.
