Preparatory meeting held for smooth conduct of 5th ODI match between India and Australia

Bhubaneswar: The preparatory meeting for hosting of the 5th One-day International (ODI) Cricket match smoothly at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack was held on Thursday at police Headquarter here in presence of Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) officials and other senior police officials of the twin city. The meeting was headed by twin city commissioner Rajendra Prasad Sharma along with OCA secretary Ashirbad Behera. Discussions were made on elaborate security arrangement to guard players and round the stadium so as to hoist the ODI match smoothly. “Players’ security will be our first priority”, said Sharma adding that tight security arrangement would be in place at the airport, hotels where the teams would stay and also in and around the stadium. Regarding installation of close circuit television (CCTV) cameras for easy monitoring and having complete control on maintaining of law and order, Sharma said nearly 74 CCTV cameras were installed during last ODI match at Barabat

Lawyers praise Government over Assembly nod to Advocates' Welfare Fund (Amendment), Bill

Bhubaneswar: The All Odisha Lawyers’ Association on Wednesday expressed its gratitude to the State Government for ensuring passing of Odisha Advocates' Welfare Fund (Amendment), Bill in the monsoon session of the Assembly that ended on August 27. Following agitation of the lawyers’ in boycott the court across the State on November 8 and 9 last year demanding the Government grant for the welfare fund, the State Government was forced to take a decision to contribute Rs 1 crore annual grant to the fund on November 19, 2012 followed by the Cabinet approval on March 14, 2012. According to association general secretary Gyana Ranjan Mohanty a lawyer serving for above five years and up to 30 years will get financial help between 50,000 and Rs 3 lakh from the fund. “We are very thankful to the State Government for its prompt measures to address our demands for the greater interest of lawyers’ fraternity. City Journalists protest against Mumbai gang-rape

Bhubaneswar: Journalists of the city covering black clothes on their mouth staged silent protest against the brutal gang-rape of a 23-year-old photojournalist in Mumbai and marched out a rally from Exibition ground to Ram Mandir square here on Sunday demanding strict action against the culprits. Journalists presented a memorandum to the Governor seeking his interference to provide a safer work place for journalists in the State as well as in the country. Talking about the heinous incident that happened to the photojournalist in Mumbai and condemning it, they demanded that the culprits should be given exemplary punishment within a specified time-frame. It is a matter of serious concern that India is becoming known as a country where people do not know how to respect a woman, they added saying stringent laws are to be made to avoid such incidents in the future. SOA university opens new agricultural institute

Bhubaneswar: Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (SOA) university here on Saturday opened Institute of Agricultural Sciences (IAS) in the university campus, the first such college in the private sector in the eastern India. This is the ninth institute under SOA university propagating professional courses with an intake capacity of 120 students. Investigate Puri-Konark marine drive rape case by SIT: NCW

Bhubaneswar: Dissatisfied over the State Government’s investigation process and callousness in approaching the matter of extreme serious consequence for women security particularly the rape and murder of 14-year-old blind girl of Beladal in Puri-Konark marine drive on June 7 last, the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Thursday recommended for formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) by the State Government for speedy investigation. The two-member team of the NCW comprising Hemlata Kheria and Manasi Pradhan after visiting the victim’s native, Puri District Headquarters Hospital, concerned police stations and officials from July 17 to July 23 suggested immediate transfer of the case to SIT consisting of police officers with expertise in crime investigation with at least one lady officer and headed by an officer not below the rank of Deputy Commissioner with a mandate to complete the investigation within 60 days. Chief Minister Naveen Pattnaik as the chief guest launched this mega scheme project distributing free laptops to as many as 20 meritorious plus two students of the city. All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar Bhubaneswar: “Organ donation can save lives in our country but it is a sorry state on its statistical point of view that Odisha shares zero per cent on organ donation,” said the experts in an awareness programme organized by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here on Tuesday on the occasion of Organ Donation Day. According to the latest Survey on Organ Transplantation and Body Donation, Odisha shares zero per cent on organ donations whereas Maharastra shares 24 per cent in it ranking highest in the country followed by Karnataka (14 per cent), Delhi (11 %), Tamil Nadu (9 %), Gujarat (6 %), Uttar Pradesh (6%), Andra Pradesh (6%), West Bengal (5%), Haryana (5%) and Kerela (3%).
