Odisha chit fund scam: High Court rejects BJD’s Banki MLA Pravat Tripathy’s bail plea

Bhubaneswar, Oct 20: The Odisha High Court on Monday rejected the anticipatory bail plea of former government chief whip and BJD’s Banki MLA Pravat Tripathy over his alleged complicity in the multi-thousand crore chit fund scam being inquired by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the state.

The decision of High Court is a major setback for Tripathy and the ruling BJD as well.

The Court had kept its verdict reserved after completing hearing on the anticipatory bail plea of Tripathy on October 16. It had also extended the interim relief granted to him over the period from arrest by CBI in chit fund link.

Tripathy had moved the High Court after CBI raided his house and interrogated in connection with the chit fund scam. He had moved the High Court on September 15 seeking anticipatory bail apprehending that the investigating agency may arrest him anytime.

“I respect the verdict of High Court. I was cooperating the CBI inquiring into the chit fund scam and will cooperate in the coming days,” said the BJD MLA in his reaction. He also denied moving Supreme Court challenging the verdict of Odisha High Court.

He, however, said that he would take his next course of action after receiving a copy of the judgement. “I will not end my legal battle,” he said.

The High Court had granted Tripathy interim relief from arrest over his links with the Artha Tatwa Group, a home grown chit fund company, till October 13.

In order to make its case stronger, the CBI had submitted an audio clip in which the Banki MLA had allegedly talked with the AT Group chief Pradip Sethy, who has duped thousands of depositors in the chit fund scam.

CBI had submitted Tripathy’s voice test report, transcript of the phone chat he had with the AT Group chief and the case diary to the High Court on Tuesday.

The court had asked the CBI to submit the forensic lab report of the voice test that sought to match his voice in a recorded phone conversation with Sethy.

The CBI had interrogated the BJD MLA three times in the chit fund scam while his houses and the house of his aide were raided in August this year.
