It’s time for traffic violators to pay fines through credit cards

Bhubaneswar: For traffic violators who make an excuse of not having ready cash to pay the fine will be made compulsory as the Commissionerate Police (CP) is planning to come out with an alternative of collecting fine through credit cards from them.

For this purpose, the CP seek help of a Hyderabad-based private company to get start-up with the gadget, a personal digital assistant (PDA) machine that can issue e-challans and collect fine through credit cards.

"With the start of the new gadget, it will reduce time and gathering of traffic violator during checking. The gadget can generate challans immediately which will put a stop on issuing challan by writing down on a receipt book," said Twin City Commissioner of Police Dr Rajendra Prasad Sharma. The gadget will be launched in Bhubaneswar only, he said.

The gadget with wireless access to traffic police central server would be capable of generating a spot challan in the name of an offender, detailing offences. Violators have to pay between Rs 100 and Rs 500 as fine under the Motor Vehicles Act and Odisha Urban Police Act.

The GPRS-enabled device will have the facility to create a database of habitual traffic offenders. Vehicle data stored in the device would be automatically transferred to regional transport office where the transport officials would find out details of the vehicle and whether the same vehicle rider was earlier penalized for flouting road rules.
