Industrialization has pushed agriculture to backseat: CPM
Rourkela: The state unit of Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) has
slammed the Central and the State governments for neglecting agriculture in
Odisha with much importance being given to industrialization.
At a press
meet in its party office at Shaktinagar here yesterday, CPM State Committee
Secretary Janardan Pati alleged that the agrarian economy is in doldrums. The
agriculture has been pushed to back burners due to faulty policy of the
governments while thousands acres of agricultural and are being handed over to
corporate houses for development, Pati lamented.
With farming
lands shrinking and agricultural production nose-diving, farmers find it
difficult to avail adequate number of labourers, he voiced concern.
He urged the
State Government to hike the minimum daily wages to Rs 334. Quoting the recent National Sample Survey (NSS), CPM secretary said that around 10 per cent people
in the country earn only Rs 17 a day whereas the big companies are minting
money.
He suggested
that the government should focus on agriculture to plug the rich-poor gap. He
said that his party will demonstrate throughout the country on this issue.
Among others present in the meeting were CPI (M) State unit Secretariat member
Bishnu Mohanty, Banmali Dhupal, Jahangir Ali, Biman Maiti and Surendra Das.
