Rourkela: The district administration today held a preparatory meeting at ADM office for smooth conduct of a week-long army recruitment rally which will commence from April 8 at Uditnagar Ground here. Rourkela: A rogue elephant, which had triggered panic having killed seven people in the interior parts of Odisha’s Sundargarh district, died this afternoon on a hill top where it was kept tied after getting tranquillized, official sources said. Arjun Behera, divisional forest officer (DFO) of Sundargarh said the jumbo died despite all efforts to save it. “It is really tragic because the expert team from Nandankanan did its level best to save it. But unfortunately, it all went in vain”, he said. The male pachyderm had fallen sick after being tranquilized by a team of experts on January 7. It had recovered a little yesterday, officials said. Before being tranquilized, it had killed seven persons since the night of December 25. 

Rourkela: The initiative taken by the Engineering department of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) to develop a Lance Carriage Assembly, an equipment used in basic oxygen furnace converters for holding and managing the lance movement safely during blowing operation, in the plant has saved the company a cash outflow of nearly Rs. 85 lakhs. Procurement of this product from outside would have cost the steel plant nearly Rs. 1 crore, an official release stated. In order to have lance carriage assembly ready always, it was decided to develop in-house manufacturing of carriage assembly. Keeping this in view, the Engineering Shops collective took up the challenging task of developing a lance carriage assembly. The fabrication of the body was done at Structural and Fabrication Shop. Rourkela: CBI sleuths on Thursday simultaneously raided the houses of a Railway official and a mine broker in connection with alleged irregularities in the transport of iron ore. The raids were conducted at the residence of Railway goods supervisor Bibhudutta Sethi (D-165) in Sector-7 in the Steel Township and mining broker Nandalal Aggarwal (K-15) in Civil Township area. CBI sources said the raids in the Steel City, conducted by a team from Kolkata with help from the local CBI unit, were part of the nationwide raids on businessmen and railway officials in connection with the alleged scam in ore transport. A total of 14 locations in the state were raided simultaneously by specially formed teams. CBI officers are believed to have seized incriminating documents during today’s raids. Rourkela: Students who were all set to write their Control System Engineering (CSE) papers as part of the ongoing fifth semester examination of the B.Tech course of Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) today are a distraught lot. The cancellation of the CSE paper at the last minute following the leak of the question paper last night has left the students fuming. “All the hard work that I had put in and the sleepless nights that I had spend in preparing for the paper have now gone down the drain. I will have to do it all over again,” said a student who did not want to be named. Another student who also requested anonymity squarely blamed the Director of Examination and others responsible for the conduct of examinations for the mess. Rourkela: The operation ‘Tusker’ which was planned to tranquilize the rogue tusker was made successful by a team of wildlife experts yesterday near Sanpatrapalli jungle under Ujjalpur forest division. The experts tranquilized the rogue tusker, which had spread havoc in Balishankara and Subdega block of the Sundargarh district killing at least seven persons in the last 15 days. In the operation, plan was made by constituting a team of officials to tranquilize the rogue tusker on locating him near Sanpatrapalli hills after moving about 7-8 km into Athakosia reserve forest. Three tranquilizers were made into target at the tusker to make him to unconsciousness. Then the tusker was tied to a tree in the forest and its tusks were trimmed as a part of preventive measure, as per sources. Rourkela: The students of Rourkela Government Autonomous College (RGAC), Panposh today locked up the main gate of their college in protest against privatization of self-financing departments by the college authority. “The college authorities while setting aside the larger interest of the self-financing staffs, students, parents have taken this unilateral decision without any prior discussions in this regard,” said the irate students. Talking to PBD, president of the college Debashis Mohanty said, “The decision of the college authorities will adversely affect self-financing students and the teaching staffs. The self-financing students are not sure of their performances as it is most likely that there will not be any regular classes due to shortage of teaching staffs.
