National Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship organised by RSP concludes

Rourkela, Apr 29: The four day National Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship organised by Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) in association with All Odisha Chess Association (AOCA) at Rourkela Club concluded today.
G S Prasad, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of RSP graced the concluding function as the Chief Guest. Among others present on the occasion were Dr A K Singh, Director (M&HS), S Pradhan, GM (Finance), P K Pradhan, GM In-charge (P&A), Rehman Khan, GM (Town Services) and R Mohanty, Vice-President, AOCA.

Speaking on the occasion, Prasad said, “It is a matter of great happiness and pride for RSP to host a National Level Event at Rourkela.”

“Organising of such events paves way for a good exposure for the youngsters. It’s a learning experience especially for the budding talents of Rourkela,” he said. Addressing the parents he stressed upon the need for the holistic development of children.

As a token gesture the CEO played a round of Blitz Chess with the Grand Master Debashish Das and later effusively praised his talent.
 
The programme started with the rendering of Bande Utkal Janani. Mrs Minati Mohapatra, DGM (Sports) and an Arjuna Awardee gave the welcome address.

The Prizes for the National Rapid Chess Championship was given by the RSP CEO. The champion of the event Grand Master Debashish Das was awarded with a trophy, momento and a cash award of Rs 50,000.

International Master Diptayan Ghosh and Grand Master Neelotpal Das received a trophy and cash awards of Rs 25,000 and Rs 15,000 respectively.

International Master K Rathnakaran and Grand Master Neelotpal Das bagged the 1st and 2nd place in the National Blitz Championship and received cash awards of Rs 20,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively. Soyamshree Mohanty was declared as the best local.

Total Cash awards worth Rs 2,41,000 were distributed to the participants. The event was declared closed by the Steel Plant CEO in the presence of other guests and dignitaries.

It is worth mentioning here that Rourkela had the honour of witnessing 40 participants from different parts of the country including two Grand Masters and nine International Masters playing in the Tournament.
