Bandh leaves no impact on RSP
Rourkela: The Congress-sponsored state-wide
bandh protesting against the police highhandedness on party workers during the September
6 rally in Bhubaneswar yesterday evoked a wide and positive response in the Steel
City with business establishments, some educational institutions remaining
closed.
Normal life was
paralysed as the bandh affected vehicular movements while commercial establishments
downed their shutters in response to the bandh call.
Thousands of
vehicles engaged in transport virtually came to a screeching halt in many parts
of the district as buses, trucks and auto-rickshaws remained off the roads. However,
train services were normal while banks, business centres, other financial
institutions and petrol pumps remained closed.
At several
places, party workers blocked the roads by burning tyres and effigies of ruling
party leaders.
The bandh was by
and large peaceful even as hundreds of Congress workers were taken into
preventive custody while picketing outside government offices and other places.
There was no report of any untoward incident. In the Sector-19 area, two supporters
were taken into preventive custody following a clash and a case has been
registered against those involved, said Additional SP Sudarsan Sethi.
There were
elaborate security arrangements in Rourkela with IG (WR) Jashwant Jethwa, SP
Rourkela, Himanshu Lal and other senior police officials monitoring law and
order situation.
Police sources said
as many as 190 male and 36 female Congress workers were detained at different
places during the bandh. They were released today, informed a police official.
Congress leader
Nihar Ray claimed the bandh was peaceful and a complete success.
BJD leader Minati
Biswal, however, said that the Congress has failed to leave any impact on the
RSP functioning during the bandh yesterday.
Biswal accused the Congressmen of unleashing ‘goondaraaj’ during the
Bhubaneswar rally. The BJD leader demanded stringent action against the
Congress workers involved in the assault on the lady police during the rally in
Bhubaneswar on September 6.
