Court works hit as lawyers go on 2-day strike
Rourkela: Court proceedings in the Steel City were completely paralysed
today as lawyers of Rourkela Bar Association (RBA) went on a two-day strike
from today in protest against the State Government’s apathy towards providing
them matching grant.
The two-day
strike is being observed by RBA in response to statewide lawyers’ strike called
by Bar Association of Odisha. Lawyers of RBA boycotted courts, seeking
amendment in Advocates’ Welfare Fund Act.
Hundreds of
lawyers slammed the State Government for its negligence towards legal
professionals in the State. They alleged that the Government has failed to
sanction the matching grant to them.
The lawyers
said that the State Government had agreed to sanction this grant to all bar
associations with 47,000 working lawyers as members so as to provide them with
post-retirement benefits.
As many as
1,200 lawyers of the RBA will get various benefits from the interests of
matching grant of Rs. 80 lakh to be given by State per annum. They will also
avail of death benefits from bar association.
“As per
decision in 2008, the State Government had agreed to pay Rs. 80 lakh annually
to the RBA while the latter will deposit same amount at state exchequer. The
money will be deposited in the banks where advocates, in case of death or
retirement, will get benefits from interest of the amount,” explained
Rajkishore Pradhan, a practicing lawyer at Rourkela.
