Dreaded criminal killed in encounter
Rourkela: A history-sheeter belonging to Pahari Chita, a dreaded
criminal gang of neighbouring Jharkhand, was shot dead and another member of
the gang was arrested during an encounter with the police inside Ambapani
forest near Badagaon in Sundargarh district today.
According to Sanjiv Arora, Superitendent of Police,
Sundargarh, acting on a tip-off about the presence of the gang members inside
the forest, a police team led by IIC Badagaon and IIC Kutra along with District
Voluntary Force (DVF) members today raided the forest at around 10.30 am today.
“On seeing the police team, the gang members fired at our
personnel who immediately retaliated. In the exchange of fire one of the gang
members was shot dead. The deceased has been identified as Deepak Sahu alias
Dipu Tiger who carried a reward on his head. Besides, another member of the
gang identified as Bandan Nayak was also arrested”, informed Arora.
Police seized one automated carbine, a pistol, and 12
rounds of live cartridges from the spot, he added.
The gang was engaged in various criminal activities for
several months and trying to establish its supremacy by terrorizing people, the
SP informed.
On February 3 this month, a similar encounter had taken
place between the police and the gang at Sagajodi forest of Balisankara area under Talsara Police
limit in which a gang member was killed.
In another case, Plant Site police
arrested five members of a gang involved in snatching operating in Rourkela.
The five persons arrested in
the incident confessed about their involvement in majority of snatching
incidences which took place at Rourkela in the last one year.
Police seized one bullet
loaded country-made gun, two swords, two knives, four live bombs and two
motor-cycles from the culprits.
