RSP launches second phase of Project Chetana
Rourkela: The second phase of Project ‘Chetana’, a joint initiative of Corporate
Social Responsibility (CSR) Department and Medical Department of Rourkela Steel
Plant (RSP) was launched by G S Prasad, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), RSP, at
the Conference Hall of Ispat General Hospital (IGH) on Friday.
It is worth mentioning that Project 'Chetana' is an initiative for treatment of Anaemia and detection and counselling of
Thalassemia and sickle cell patients from in and around Rourkela.
Being implemented by a local NGO Sankalp with
an estimated Rs. 14 lakh, the project aims at creating awareness about sickle
cell Anaemia and Thalassemia by setting up camps in the peripheral regions of
Rourkela.
Many imported sophisticated blood testing
equipments have been procured for the purpose. The most important equipment
namely D-10 Haemoglobin Testing system uses only four drops of the blood for
testing.
Speaking on the occasion, Prasad stressed prevention
of Anaemia through proper nutritional practices.
Stating that the genetic test is required to
identify sickle cell before marriage, he said “Thalassemia is genetic, but it
can be prevented by getting the blood tested prior to marriage. The disease has
no cure and no parent wants to see their child suffer.”
“The disease affects the family both financially
and psychologically”, he added.
Appreciating the initiative, the CEO said
“This is a novel initiative and I hope that it will benefit the people and
reduce the effects of the disease.”
D Basu, ED (P&A) spoke about the economic
upliftment of people to prevent the diseases caused by nutritional deficiency. He
described various initiatives of RSP under the CSR Department for the
economical growth of the downtrodden in the periphery of the Plant.
Dr. S K Mishra, Director In-charge (M&HS)
delivered the welcome address while Dr. B B Rao, Director (M&HS) proposed a
vote of thanks.
The meeting was coordinated by Dr. S S Pati,
Joint Director (M&HS) and the project coordinator of ‘Chetana’.
Several senior RSP officials, office bearers
of Sankalp, teachers from various schools, and media persons were also present
on the occasion.
