Students protest privatization of self-financing departments

Rourkela: The students of Rourkela Government Autonomous College (RGAC), Panposh today locked up the main gate of their college in protest against privatization of self-financing departments by the college authority.

“The college authorities while setting aside the larger interest of the self-financing staffs, students, parents have taken this unilateral decision without any prior discussions in this regard,” said the irate students.

Talking to PBD, president of the college Debashis Mohanty said, “The decision of the college authorities will adversely affect self-financing students and the teaching staffs. The self-financing students are not sure of their performances as it is most likely that there will not be any regular classes due to shortage of teaching staffs.

According to Mohanty, Computer Science was introduced as a self financing subject in 1997-98 with 32 seats with the initiatives of Prof. B M Swain (HOD, Physics). Due to heavy demand, the sanctioned strength has increased to 64 seats and not a single seat has fallen vacant since then. Besides, the performance of the students was also highly satisfactory.

He also said that in 2011-12, more self financing courses were also introduced in the college with subjects like MSc in Computer Science, Undergraduate Course in Electronics and Telecommunication and Mathematics with Computer Component during the tenure of Prof. Swain which received overwhelming response from the parents and students.

“However, our present principal Dr. Sudam Dang, in order to settle his personal score with Prof. Swain, is trying his best to hand over these self-financing subjects to the private parties”, rued Mohanty.

The agitating students later met the Sub-Collector and handed him a memorandum addressed to the Higher Education Minister.

Contacted, the Principal said, “We have initiated this process for the benefits of the students with the approval of the State Government. Privatization of these self-financing subjects would do away with staff crunch as the government has not made any provision for recruitment of teachers for these subjects. Besides, outsourcing of the subjects would also ensure proper study and conduct of examinations in a time-bound manner”.
