Young technical minds should serve society: V K Saraswat


Rourkela: “Development of the modern world much depends on science, engineering and technology while the role of an engineer is linked closely to the needs of society,” said V K Saraswat, Scientific Adviser to Defence Minister. He is also the Director General, DRDO and Secretary Defence, R&D. The National Institute of Technology (NIT) produces technical minds every year, he added.

Speaking at the 10th convocation ceremony of NIT here today, Saraswat praised the institute for its growth from strength to strength over the years. “It has become a Centre for imparting quality education in Engineering and Technology,” he observed.

He also stated that the young technical minds produced from NIT should work for India’s technological self-reliance in the field of defence. “I consider these moments with you worthwhile. There are several technological challenges before the country. You have to identify areas of your own strength and interest in the endeavour of making our nation a ‘Technology Leader’,” he said.

“Our nation is marching ahead in all fields; now empowered with knowledge, you have to fortify the nation with your personal traits by nurturing a sense of pride to serve it,” he observed.

The adviser to defence minister said that the future is likely to see space-based strike systems like space based lasers, interceptors and maneuverable satellites. “Our country needs to consider the impact of space conflict on terrestrial communication, surveillance and intelligence and navigation systems. To counter this, India needs to develop electronic counter measures and develop technologies for space security that include ability to identify and attack ground stations, satellites, developing skill to kill satellite weapons and acquiring capability to attack through micro satellites,” he said.

He called upon the teachers to inculcate a spirit of creative thinking among students so that they can think innovatively and provide solutions to complex problems the country is facing in several sector.

He also spoke on higher education, society and sustainability, cyber security, food and health security and energy security.

As many as 30 candidates from different departments were awarded PhD degrees. Besides, 31 M. Tech (R), 219 M. Tech., 130 M. Sc., 08 M.A., 20 MBA and 452 B. Tech. students were also awarded with degree certificates by the Prof. Sunil Sarangi, Director of NIT.

Bijili B, Tithy Sahu, Swetalina Panigrahi, Animesh Kumar Srivastava, Bikash Mohanty, Chandan Kanta Das were awarded with Gold Medal in different disciplines for the year-2012. Besides, 38 silver medals are also awarded.

Prof. Deba Kumar Tripathy, 1968 batch B.Sc. (Engg) in Mechanical Engineering, Sandip Das, 1977 batch B.Sc. (Engg) in Mechanical Engineering, and Madhusudan Padhy, IAS, 1984 batch B.Sc. (Engg) in Metallurgical Engineering were awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award-2012 in the Convocation for their significant contribution to the Society.

Among others, B S Sudhir Chandra, Chairman, Board of Governors (BOG), Er. S K Upadhyay, Registrar, Prof. S Panigrahi, PIC, Convocation, R K Sinha, Secretary, PRC, teachers, students of NIT and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
