CITU, other trade unions to hold nationwide stir from Feb 20


Rourkela: In protest against several anti-people policies of both State and Central government, Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has called for a two-day, all India strike beginning from February 20. A number of other various trade unions of the country will participate in the nation-wide strike.

Addressing a meeting here today, State General Secretary of CITU, Bishnu Mohanty lambasted the Congress led UPA-II government for price rise of different commodities, FDI in retail, hike in railway fare, and the anti-people labour Act.

During the strike, CITU will press for raising minimum wages for workers to Rs. 10,000, equal wages, social security for worker in the unauthorized sector, pension for all, ESI, gratuity and other benefits for workers, said Mohanty.

Mohanty announced the agitation plan at a meeting held at Bisra Chowk, where he flagged off ‘Jatha’, a vehicle, to highlight issues affecting the common man.

The vehicle is wrapped with slogans, banners and messages of CITU on a host of issues- direct cash transfer system, rise in prices of essential commodities, irregularities by the Congress-led UPA-II government, FDI in retail, rise of railway fares and anti-people labour Act.

Jatha will cover Western Odisha and 15 other districts in the State to sensitize people about issues affecting people. It will be led by Biman Maiti, Mohanty added.

The call for the all India two day general strike is against the anti-people policies of both State and Central government and direct cash transfer system. All Central trade unions including AITUC, INTUC, HMS, BMS, AICCTU, AIUTUC and other independent all India federations like insurance, postal, BSNL, banking, medical sectors will support the strike, informed Mohanty.

Among others, Laxman Munda, Banamali Dhupal, Jahangir Ali, Pratap Nayak, Basant Nayak, Rajkishore Pradhan, Ajay Sharma and other members of CITU were present.
