ICCR-NIT talks on clash between Indian-Afghan students

NIT Rourkela (Indian) students staged dharna
in front of college main gate

Rourkela: Situation at the campus of National Institute of Technology (NIT) is limping back to normalcy after remaining tense for the last two days in the wake of a clash between two groups of Indian and Afghanistan students on February 9.

A team from the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR), New Delhi today held discussion with the NIT authorities and representatives of both the Afghan and Indian students and took stock of the situation, informed Santosh Upadhyay, Registrar, NIT.

He also informed that as on today, things are normal and classes of various courses are being held smoothly.

According to the Director of NIT, Sunil Sarangi, the Indian students claimed that they were innocent and requested him to expel the accused Afghan students. Sarangi also said that the Afghan students will not be brought back to the college hostel till normalcy is restored.

All the 23 Afghan students have been shifted to Hill View Guest House nearer to NIT at Sector-4 while tight security has also been provided to them.

Despite police deployment in the campus, the Indian students staged dharna  in front of the main gate of the college for the last two days, accusing the Afghan students of committing the mistake first. Police have been deployed in and outside the college campus to prevent any untoward incident.

A committee comprising teachers, students and college administration, held a meeting to sort out the issue and asked the team looking into the matter to submit a report within two weeks. In protest against the incident, more than 3000 students out of total of 4500 students did not attend their classes on Monday and Tuesday. Instead, they staged protests demanding immediate action against the errant Afghan students. Pledging not to attend classes, they pleaded their innocence.

It may be mentioned that similar incident had taken place in Ravenshaw University, Cuttack in 2011 that created havoc in national level. The state government had to interfere in the said matter to resolve the issue. At that time Amitendra Nath Sinha, SP Rourkela was the DCP at Cuttack. Therefore Sinha is very cautious to handle the current situation at Rourkela because of which things are normal now.
