‘Govt should amend laws to protect scribes’

Rourkela: Former Additional Director General, Prasar Bharati, Abhaya Kumar Padhi, said that the government should amend laws to protect and safeguard newsmen as they are frequently facing attacks.

He was speaking at a seminar on ‘Media activism and its fallout’ and an interaction session organized by Paschimanchala, a weekly newspaper of Western Odisha, on its 13th annual day celebration at Rourkela Institute of Management Studies (RIMS) at Chhend here yesterday.

Padhi said that the Majithia Committee will guide all working journalists in the country. “One should be honest to journalism and work with pride instead of harassing people with his/her work,” he observed.

Being the Chief Guest on the occasion, Padhi dwelt upon the pros and cons of media activism in the backdrop of media witnessing rapid proliferation. The number of newspapers, electronic media, social networking, SMS, MMS and FM radio had undergone a revolution, Padhi added.

Padhi lamented the fact that many new channels at times go on broadcasting a particular news all day long, neglecting other important events of the day thereby decreasing its growth and development in actual sense.

Among others, Surama Mishra, Editor of the weekly, Baidyanath Mishra, Executive Editor, Paschimanchala, Rita Pattnaik, Vice-Chairperson, RIMS, Ramesh Bal, President, Rourkela Bar Association and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
