Six community colleges for State
Rourkela: Six out of 200 Community Colleges proposed by the Union
Government across the country will be set up in Odisha. These projects will be
implemented on a pilot basis.
The Ministry
of Human Resources Development (MHRD) has communicated to the Department of
Higher Education (DoHE) in this regard recently and has advised to identify the
places immediately.
Principal
Secretary Higher Education, Gagan Kumar Dhal, has held talk with the district
administrations in this regard, said sources.
Community
Colleges are a supplementary system of education aimed at empowering
individuals through appropriate skill development leading to gainful employment
in collaboration with the local industry and community. These colleges are a
source of economic growth because they provide an educated and skilled
work-force that improves the quality of life for individuals, students,
communities, and the nation.
Community
Colleges are being set up on a pilot basis from Academic Session 2013 in the
existing colleges and polytechnics, said officials.
Now, the
State Government will have to identify the colleges/polytechnics. The Government
will also scout for Industry Partners including Business and Service Sector
because the courses and programmes will be offered keeping in view the
requirement of the local industries. This initiatives is being taken up by the
MHRD with an aim of checking the drop outs and enabling them to improve their
skill development, said sources.
According to
statements of Union Minister HRD, Kapil Sibal, the adult literacy programme
aims at covering about 70 million working populations in the bracket of 18-64
years in the country by 2020. About 60 per cent of them are women.
The Union
Government is trying to rope in international experts to execute the programme
while two international conferences will be held on February 6 and 7 at New
Delhi to discuss the issue threadbare.
Experts,
managers of Community Colleges, officials from states and senior officials of
relevant industries from USA, UK, Canada, New Zealand and Germany will
participate in the conference, added the official.
