Former Odisha Ranji captain Harmohan Praharaj passes away


Rourkela: Former captain of Odisha Ranji Cricket Team Harmohan Bhawanishankar Praharaj died of cardiac arrest last evening at Ispat General Hospital (IGH). He was 55 and is survived by his wife, a son and a married daughter.

He was suffering from Jaundice and cardiac problems. Harmohan was working as Assistant Manager (Sports) in Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP).

A right-arm medium pacer and an all-rounder, Praharaj started his 14-year long first-class career in 1978, took 108 wickets playing 42 matches. One 10-wicket haul and six times 5-wicket hauls are his achievements. As a right-handed batsman, he had scored 1372 runs in his first-Class cricketing career with one century and three half-centuries.

Being reckoned as a great coach, many cricketers including present Odisha Captain Ranji team Natraj Behera, Subash Mohanty, Alekh Barik, Sahid Khan, Sujan Mohanty, Atish Jena, Alok Pradhan, Ansuman Gop, Amit Das, Santosh Maharana, Ranjit Singh, Ashok Barik and Gobind Poddar were trained under his guidance. Praharaj was born on July 21, 1957 in Cuttack.


RSP CEO G S Prasad with other officers, Minister Subrat Tarai, MLA Sarada Prasad Nayak, sport mentors of Rourkela Sports Association, Panposh Sports Association, Rourkela Sports Federation and other cricket lovers of Rourkela expressed deep grief over Praharaj’s demise.
