Students’ gherao BPUT office

Rourkela: Students’ unrest continues to prevail in BPUT in Rourkela. Students of BPUT today gheraoed the head office of the technical university here in support of their various demands, including shifting of its main office.

Located at Jail Road, Chhend Colony in Rourkela, the university’s office was fully operational in Rourkela in 2003. The office has come up over 125 acres. Initially, its office functioned in 2010 in Bhubaneswar. Buckled under pressure from various quarters, the state government decided to run its permanent office on August 27, 2012 in the Steel City.

However, the decision to shift BPUT office to Rourkela permanently triggered resentment among students. A case has been filed with demand to run the BPUT main office in Bhubaneswar as more engineering colleges affiliated to BPUT are in Bhubaneswar than in Rourkela. However, High Court rejected the case, favouring to run the BPUT main office in Rourkela.

Students had taken up the matter with Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof. J K Sathpathy in the presence of ADM Rourkela R N Mishra.

Sathpathy came out with explanation that it is the state government’s decision and he has nothing to say on it.

The VC assured students that various other issues of the institution will be sorted out.

Members of the BPUT’s students’ union submitted a memorandum to the VC listing out their problems.
