Two held for Temple murder


Rourkela: The case of the murder of a guard of Shirdi Sai Temple and loot of the hundi there has been solved by Rourkela police with the arrest of two youngsters. According to Rourkela SP Himanshu Lal, on the night of September 20, at around 1.30 am, the accused named Sapneswar Das (26) alias Kuna, an erstwhile priest of the temple and Indramani Das (19) alias Nandan, had entered the temple near TCI chowk, Vedvyas, by climbing the western boundary wall and over powered the Security Guard, Jyoti Prakash Nayak and brutally assaulted him with a dumbbell and an iron rod as a result of which, he succumbed to his injuries.

Then, the accused took the key of the temple from guard and committed a stole Rs. 3,155 by breaking open the lock two Dakshina boxes and escaped from the spot. Acting on an FIR lodged by the temple administration, both Kuna who hails from Alabha and Nandan from Badapada under Pattamundai Police Station were nabbed today. “Both the accused have confessed to their crimes,” said Lal. They also confessed that on September 9, they had committed theft at Lord Ganesh temple and had stolen cash worth Rs. 185 and two mobiles. A case has been registered against them under section 450/394/302 of IPC at Brahmani Taranga Police Station. Rs. 3,155 cash, one dumbbell, one iron rod and two mobile phones were seized from them. Since, the security guard died on duty, compensation of Rs. 50,000 was given to his family from Red Cross, Sai fund and the Police. “The accused have been sent to judicial custody after being produced in court,” stated Lal.
