Apollo to set up 314 tele-clinics by March 2013

Rourkela: Apollo Tele Health Service (an initiative of Apollo hospitals group), in collaboration with Odisha Trust of Technical Education and Training (OTTET), is going to set up 314 Apollo tele-clinics in 314 blocks of the State by the end of March 2013, said General Manager (Business Development) of Apollo Tele Health Service Kishore Reddy at Bhubaneswar today.

He added that the country needs about 2.8 million beds in different hospitals by 2014. “We have only 0.07 per cent beds in different hospitals of the country. If we create 1 lakh beds per year in all hospitals, it will take 20 years to fill the gap”, he stated. He was speaking at the launching ceremony of Tele-medicine services at Apollo hospital.

Interacting with media persons Reddy said, “Specialist services in health care are not available in rural areas. About 90 per cent of the specialist doctors are living in urban areas and more than 70 per cent of the rural population is living in rural and semi urban areas”.

Telemedicine is the use of telecommunication and information technologies in order to provide clinical health care from a distance. It exchanges medical information between two clinics by using the communication tools. It helps eliminate distance barriers and improves access to health care services. The 314 Apollo Tele-clinics will have paramedical staff and doctors along with the tele-medicine facility.

“At the primary level, the doctors present in the clinic will examine the patients. Then they will communicate with experts present at the different locations of Apollo Hospitals, including Apollo Vizag and Hyderabad about the problems and then the expert will give the solution,” Reddy said.

“The health care facilities  will be provided during working hours and will be open 24x7 for critical care and emergency,” he added.

OTTET is implementing the tele-medicine project in Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode with support from the State government and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Department.

“Patients will avail this service in their own territory. There is no need to travel long distances for health care facilities,” said Managing Trustee of OTTET K N Bhagat.
