Automated Blood Cell Separator at IGH, Rourkela
Rourkela: A sophisticated Automated Blood Cell Separator was
installed at the RSP-run Ispat General Hospital (IGH) here yesterday.
The state-of-the-art Blood Cell Separator is
a Mobile Collection System and operates on the highly updated apheresis
technology. It is a highly mobile, compact and lightweight total apheresis
system and technically advanced.
Once the operator initiates the MCS+ procedure,
this sophisticated separator automatically removes whole blood from a donor,
separates the blood into components (red blood cells, white blood cells,
plasma, and platelets), retains one or more of the components, and returns the
reminder of the blood to the donor. It takes comparatively less time (60 to 65
minutes) for the programme to run. The components obtained are transfused or
used to prepare blood products for administration. It is both user and donor
friendly and helpful to the patients where there is absolute indication of
platelet transfusion.
Inaugurating the Haemonetics– MCS+ Blood Cell Separator System (Automated
Blood Cell Separator System), G S Prasad, Chief Executive Officer of Rourkela
Steel Plant (RSP) said, “IGH will now be capable of
helping not only the employees of RSP and their family
members, but also all people residing in and around Rourkela.” With the
sophisticated cell separator becoming operational, there would be better
all-round patient care at IGH, he added.
Earlier, Dr. S Mohanty, Joint Director (Medicine) spoke on various
aspects of blood platelets and diagnostic and treatment methods related to it.
Dr. M Soren, Assistant Director (Blood Transfusion Centre) gave an overview of
the Haemonetics MCS+ system. At the conclusion, Dr. B B Rao, Director
(M&HS) proposed the vote of thanks while Dr. Anil Dutt, Assistant Director
(Nuclear Medicine) & TA to Director In-charge, M&HS, was the Master of
Ceremony on the occasion.
Among others present on the occasion were S N Roy, ED(Works), D Basu,
