AITUC unhappy over revised minimum wages

Rourkela: A host of issues including wage settlement, medical facilities, E-payment services, working hours, perks and benefits, profit sharing scheme, house maintenance expenses, energy allowance, fringe benefits, annual increment, up-gradation of pay scale, incentive and reward scheme, leave, live cover scheme, educational loans and employment of the dependent came up for discussion at the 5th District Conference of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) here today.

Activists of Steel Mazdoor Union, Thikadar Mazdoor Union, Kendu Leaf Workers’ Union, Lathikata Mazdoor Union, ASHA group, Pachika Sahayika Sangha, Niramana Shramika Sangha and Anganwadi groups affiliated to AITUC put forth their problems at the conference held at ITDA Hall, Uditnagar.

The main focus was on the minimum wages for workers. State Working President of AITUC Prabhat Mishra, inaugurating the Conference, said that the minimum wages recently declared by the State Government will be opposed.

On October 6, the state government had revised minimum wages of various categories of labourers. But when prices of essential commodities have sky-rocketed, the revised wages will not meet their daily needs, said Mishra.

He demanded that minimum wages should be Rs. 250-350 per day or Rs. 10,000 per month for workers. Meanwhile, various trade union leaders of Rourkela have called for an early meeting of the National Joint Committee for Steel (NJCS) Industry.

The representatives of Central trade unions like HMS, INTUC, AITUC and CITU have been urging the SAIL for the last six months to finalize the new pay scale. However, no steps have been taken by the SAIL authorities till date, Mishra alleged.

The trade unions had earlier submitted a charter of demands for wage settlement with effect from January, 2012 to December, 2016 to the CEO, Rourkela Steel Plant.
The members of old committees were replaced with new members for proper functioning of AITUC in Sundargarh District.

Among others State Vice-President AITUC Ashok Das, State Secretaries of AITUC Pradosh Mohanty and Maheswar Rout, Minati Sahu, District Secretary, AITUC and members of different trade unions were present.

It may be noted that AITUC, established in 1920 by Punjab Keshari Late Lala Lajpat Ray in Bombay and the first trade unions of our country, who is fighting for the workers’ plight is getting worse day by day due to ineffectiveness of committee members present.
