Tirkey fans throng photo exhibition on his life

Rourkela: Hundreds of hockey lovers thronged the photo exhibition featuring life and important moments of former Indian hockey star Dilip Tirkey. Organized by Rourkela Sports Association, the two-day photo show was started at Rourkela Club here today.

The photo exhibition has showcased Padmashree Dillip Tirkey’s life, the humble beginning of his career and his impressive journey from a young tribal lad of Sundargarh to a three-time Olympian along with a total of 412 international caps.

Inaugurating the exhibition, Minister of Commerce and Transport, Subrat Tarai, said that it will inspire the young generation and the people of Rourkela towards sports especially in hockey. They will also get to know many things about Tirkey yet unknown.

The minister also recalled a similar exhibition on life of the hockey star held in 2009 in Bhubaneswar which was inaugurated by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. He was all praise for the organizers of the exhibitions but opined that it would have got better exposure had it been exhibited on wheels.

In the evening, hundreds of fans of the ace hockey legend took glimpses on his life and his rise as a star, informed president of Rourkela Sports Association, Mihir Ray. The exhibition is the perfect way to celebrate Tirkey’s sports tenure and to know more about him, added Ray.

The photo exhibition has also featured Tirkey’s poems, paintings, portraits, articles, rare photographs, attires, achievements, medals and several other memorabilia.

Students from different schools and colleges accounted for major chunk of the visitors to the Rourkela Club. Lipsa Sahoo, a student of Delhi Public School, said, “It is a great pleasure to see the life and moments of Dillipji and also to get an opportunity of having his autograph.”

Namrata Jashmin Bara, a trainee of Panposh Sports Hostel, Rourkela, said that the exhibition on life of Dillip Sir will inspire the hockey aspirants.

Former Indian hockey captain Tirkey said, “At a time when hockey is dying a slow death, this exhibition will definitely give a ray of hope.”

Tirkey, who is an Arjuna awardee and now MP, Rajya Sabha, expressed his happiness and thanked his fans for organizing such an event.
