Exhibition, workshop mark National Press Day

Rourkela: Media persons of Rourkela, Bonai and Panposh Sub-Divisions for the first time celebrated the National Press Day (NPD) today at ITDA Hall, Uditnagar here and marked the day with an exhibition and a workshop on several issues related to journalists and their profession.

A workshop on ‘Role of media in development of society’ was organized on the occasion. Speaking at the workshop, CEO, Rourkela Steel Plant, G S Prasad, praised the role of media persons as watchdogs in society. He also spoke on the importance of newspapers in daily life. Prasad talked on Rural Journalism saying it is the mainstay of Odia Press, as it talks about the core issues concerning people.

Chief Speaker on the occasion Prof. Prabhat Mallick of Ispat Autonomous College said the newspaper and society are inter-related. Being the fourth pillar, media gives protection to other three pillars in maintaining a proper balance in between.

Budget is the main mode to work out a newspaper’s marketing but one should not kill the importance of news in placing more advertisements in all newspaper, said Mallick adding don’t be more professional nowadays in media houses and its importance shouldn’t be ignored. All news should relate on 100 per cent ethic, factual and credible based and more towards issue based and in eradicating corruption from the society. Elaborating on its importance, he further said a newspaper is like a morning tea for a common man.
An exhibition featuring as many as 203 newspaper and 42 magazines from different parts of the country and abroad was organized.

Susant Rout, an observer on the occasion said, for the first time I have been known to more varieties of collections in this exhibition and thanked the efforts of the event organizer.

The whole programme was anchored by Arun Mallick while vote of thanks given by Mahendra Mishra.
