Rourkela orphanage raided, one arrested

Rourkela: Following allegation of girls being sexually abused at Sarvabhoutik Anath Shishu Ashram at Basanti Colony on Malgodown Road, police along with the members of the district Child Welfare Committee (CWC) today raided it. One Deepak Bal was arrested and a case has been registered against him.

According to Abul Kalam Azad, member of CWC, as many as 102 children are staying in this ashram. Many of them are orphans.

The CWC team has reportedly interrogated Mahendra Bal, owner and care-taker of the Ashram, in this connection. One Deepak Bal, nephew of Mahendra is now under the custody of CWC.

After conducting raids, the team has sent 10 girls suspected to have been sexually abused, for medical examination at Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH).
Sources in the CWC said that action will be taken against the accused persons after getting medical reports of these girls.

The district Collector has directed to seal the ashram. However, the step to seal it has not been taken as because some inmates have refused to leave the ashram. The inmates will be under surveillance by the local administration.

Sudarshan Sethi, Additional SP, Rourkela, said after getting the report from Babita Mahapatra, Chairperson of local CWC, police team raided the ashram.
