ASI killed, 4 cops hurt in mob attack

Rourkela: An Assistant Sub-Inspector of police was killed and four policemen were seriously injured in a mob attack while trying to execute an arrest warrant at a village in Sundargarh district last night.

The incident took place when a five-member police team led by Lanjiberna outpost in-charge ASI Nabin Patel went to tribal-dominated Dudukabahal village to arrest one Ballav Majhi wanted in case of assault of Wesco employees some months ago.

As the police apprehended Ballav, he raised an alarm. At this, some villagers including his relatives attacked and severely thrashed the policemen. While three of the policemen managed to escape from the spot, Patel and a home guard Birendra Sahu were caught by the irate mob.

The villagers later tied the duo to the seats of the jeep and pushed it to a nearby bridge from where it rolled into the swollen Badjore River which was swept away by the strong river current.

While Birendra managed to free himself and swam to safely, the ASI met the watery grave. Following information, Sundargarh SP Sanjib Arora and Western Range DIG Yashwant Jethwa rushed to the spot. However, the body could be traced.

“This morning, a team of Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) fished out the body of Patel about 3 km downstream near Dudukabahal village under Rajgangpur police station limits”, Sundargarh Superintendent of Police Sanjeeb Arora said.

Police in the meanwhile have arrested six persons, including the elder brother of the arrested man, in connection with the incident, the SP informed.

The body of the ASI was later taken to the District headquarters office where a guard of honour was given to him. Meanwhile, Director General of Police Prakash Mishra today announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 4 lakh to the kin of the deceased.
