RSP celebrates National Sports Day

Rourkela: Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) celebrated ‘National Sports Day’, which is also the birthday of hockey legend Dhyan Chand, amidst fun and festivity at Biju Patnaik Hockey Stadium here yesterday.

The programme commenced with the offering of floral tributes to Dhyan Chand by chief guest Dr. S K Mishra, Director in charge (M&HS); senior officers of RSP and Sports department, eminent sportspersons and the sports lovers of the Steel City.

Highlighting the importance of sports in human life, Dr. Mishra exhorted the students to pursue sporting activities in order to maintain a sound physical and mental health. He elaborated at length on Dhyan Chand’s immense contribution to Indian hockey. He also spoke in detail on how the sportspersons of the region have carved niche for themselves in the sporting firmament of the country.

Former Olympian Michael Kindo was felicitated by the Sports department on this occasion. Prizes were also presented to the winners of the essay and debate competitions, organized earlier among the school students to mark the celebration.

Earlier, Minati Mohapatra, AGM (Sports), RSP welcomed the gathering and spoke about the life and times of Dhyan Chand.

An exhibition hockey match was played between the players of the SAIL Hockey Academy and Jindal Steel to commemorate the occasion. SAIL Hockey Academy won the match 4-2.
