Independence Day celebrated with pomp and gaiety

Rourkela: Notwithstanding tight security in view of the threat perception, Independence Day was celebrated with gaiety in Steel City today.

Unfurling the national flag at the Uditnagar parade ground here, RDC (Northern Range) Arabinda Padhee called upon the youth to channelize their energy for the development of the country. He also urged the people to plant at least one tree each to create a clean and green environment.

As many as 68 troupes, including the Odisha police band, participated in the parade managed by local reserve police inspector D N Bage.

IG of police (WR) Jaswant Jethwa, Rourkela SP Himanshu Lal, Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Rabindranath Mishra and Panposh Sub-collector Shyam Bhakt Mishra were among senior officers present on the occasion marked by colorful cultural programmes.

Apart from this, Rourkela Steel Plant celebrated the 66th Independence Day of the nation with ardent devotion and patriotic fervour. G S Prasad, CEO, RSP, unfurled the National Flag, inspected the parade and took the salute at an impressive march past at Ispat Stadium where thousands of students, along with the CISF and OSAP personnel, marched forward saluting the tricolor amidst thunderous applause.

The RSP CEO lauded the efforts of RSP employees as whole and called upon them to work to meet the target. He also listed various welfare works of RSP for the development of its employees as well as local people. Several employees were awarded on this occasion. Over 60 groups from various school and colleges took part in the parade in this event.

“We have to ensure that we always remain ahead of our competitors. On the occasion of Independence Day, let us pledge to do whatever needs to be done so that our steel plant and steel township become models depicting safe working environment and we fulfill our role as a responsible corporate citizen. This will be a worthy example to be emulated by others thereby making Rourkela a place where people will love to work and stay,” Prasad said addressing the gathering.

Later, Prasad gave away the ‘Srujani’ awards to Departments as well as individual employees. Students were awarded for academic excellence, while 88 employees were awarded the coveted Nehru Vishista Karmachari Puraskar for their dedication and commitment to duty. 15 sports persons were also felicitated for their achievements. CEO also presented awards for the best performing contingents of the Independence Day parade.
