Sponge iron unit sealed, owner arrested

Rourkela: Police on yesterday sealed Maa Tarini Sponge iron unit at Kalunga near here for illegally procuring iron ore, and arrested its executive director Bhupendra Das and remanded him to judicial custody.

The arrest of Das came following recent raids on the said unit at Jiabahal, Brahmani Tarang police said.

According to police, the plant owned by Hanuman Goel was found to be not maintaining proper records of iron ore procurement and other transactions. During the earlier raid on Friday, it was found from the documents that that the company which had shown shortage of iron ore stock, was false.

Investigation is on and more arrests are likely, police said. Sources said that the police had not taken any steps earlier to arrest the owner of the plant against whom a criminal case under Arms Act was registered few months ago. At that time it was alleged that the police did not take action against him due to his close proximity with the higher officials.

It is also alleged that several sponge iron unit in and around Kalunga Industrial Estate are involved in fraud practices.

Prithvi-II test fired successfully

Rourkela: India today successfully test-fired its indigenously developed nuclear capable Prithvi-II missile with a strike range of 350 km from a test range at Chandipur near Balasore. The surface-to-surface missile was test fired from a mobile launcher in salvo mode from launch complex-3 of Integrated Test Range at about 9:21 AM, defence sources said. The launch of the sophisticated missile, conducted as part of operational exercise by the Strategic Force Command (SFC) of the defence services, was successful, they said. “The missile was randomly chosen from the production stock and the total launch activities were carried out by the specially formed SFC and monitored by the scientists of Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) as part of practice drill,” sources said. Santhali writer nominated for Sahitya Academy award

Rourkela: Gangadhar Hansda, a banker and litterateur has been nominated for the prestigious ‘Kendriya Sahitya Academy Award’ for the year 2012 for his collection of short stories in Santhali language, ‘Banchaw Akan Gojhona’. Hansda, an eminent Santhali writer and Santhali culture activist, has devoted himself to the popularization of Santhali literature and culture after retiring as a Branch Manager from Union Bank of India.
