Strike threat over sorry state of bus terminus

Rourkela: Irked over deplorable condition of the 18-year old bus terminus in the Steel City, Sundargarh Motor Karmachari Sangh (SMKS) and Rourkela Mini Bus Association (RMBA) have threatened to launch strike.

Addressing a joint press meet here, functionaries of SMKS and RMBA alleged that though around Rs. 20 crores has so far been collected from this terminus through various sources, precious little has been done for the development, maintenance and management of the terminus, which was set up in 1993.

President of RMBA and SMKS, M D Parija alleged that the Rourkela Development Authority (RDA) which manages the terminus is hardly doing anything for its basic facilities even though it collects around Rs 7 lakh from bus parking, rents of shopkeepers and other sources.

Even the basic minimum facilities for a bus terminal- drinking water, lightning and toilet- are not available. Besides, hundreds of employees working in various transport services do not get the various facilities as provided in the Odisha Motor Vehicle Management and Control Act, Parija alleged. These employees are deprived of ESI or medical benefits.

General Secretary of these two organizations Bishnu Mohanty informed that RDA authorities are planning to have a discussion on the 15-points charter of demands by SMKS and RMBA on 13 August. The bus terminus is most likely to be closed, he lamented. Among others Wakil Choudhary, Biman Maiti, B Choudhary were present.
