Construction workers demand job security in unorganised sector

Rourkela: The Odisha Construction Workers’ union (OCWU) under the banner of Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), today urged the State Government to initiate measures for providing job security to the workers in unorganised sectors.

Holding a demonstration in front of the office of the Deputy Labour Commissioner, Rourkela Division here, the OCWU members demanded fulfillment of their three-point charters of demands which include issue of identity cards for all construction workers, early implementation of the decisions of the Construction Workers’ Welfare Board and all benefits for the construction workers as recommended by it.

The agitating members during the demonstration locked the Deputy Commissioner Office gate. They said that as a menial worker should get at least Rs. 10,000 per month to run his/her family, the minimum daily wage, therefore, should be increased to Rs. 335 per day.

They also took up other issues relating to issuance of health insurance cards, tool kits, pension and medical facilities benefits for all construction workers of the State.

Rajkishore Pradhan, Jajati Keshari Sahoo, Surendra Das and other members were present.
