No end to row over TU leadership

Rourkela: A row over some posts in Rourkela Shramik Sangh (RSS) has been continuing since 2010. Two groups in the labourers’ body claiming to be genuine office-bearers. While Prasant Kumar Behera claims to be president of RSS, Mahipal Bag claims the post of General Secretary.

Talking to media persons here today, Prasant alleged that the group led by D D Subudhi as president and M D N Panicker as general secretary are not actual office-bearers of RSS. Quoting an enquiry report made by the District Labour Commissioner (DLC), Rourkela, Prasant stated that RSS is affiliated to INTUC and a registered trade union of SAIL since October 01, 1988.

As per the constitution of the Sangh, the general council members of RSS had removed M D N Panicker from the post of general secretary on May 11, 2010, who was replaced with Mahipal. Since then, Mahipal in the capacity of GS had submitted the annual return of the union for the year 2009 on June 16, 2010. The DLC had verified the matter through secret ballot conducted in Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) in 2010, claimed Prasant.

However, when Panicker continued his claim on the GS post this controversial matter came to the Regional Labour Commissioner (Centre) to look into the controversy surrounding claims and counter claims on actual office-bearers in RSS, added Prasant. DLC, Rourkela, was asked to confirm it. Mahipal had registered an FIR in this connection.

Among others working president K N Biswal, Vice-president Patel Chandra Mahanta and other members of RSS were present.
