Steps to curb power crisis discussed

Rourkela: Steps to tackle electricity problems were discussed in a meeting held at Bhubaneswar Behera Auditorium in NIT, Rourkela. WESCO officials and Energy and I & PR Minister Arun Sahu had a discussion on the energy crisis in Sundargarh district as well as the State. Officials of the rank of Junior Engineer and above of WESCO were present in the meeting.

Several problems faced by WESCO like theft of electric wires, allegations from customers about irregularities and distribution problems in remote parts were discussed. Calling upon WESCO staff to work towards fulfilling the motto of the Energy department, “Power to All”, the minister assured them of all help in the endeavour.

Briefing media persons, Arun Sahu informed that power cuts in Sundargarh district is a major concern for the people.

He added that the State loses Rs. 3200 crores every year due to problems related to production, distribution and transmission of power. The production of power though requires 132/133 KV power stations in all districts to supply power to the remotest area, which lacks leads to transmission fail thereby creating shortage of power supply in remote areas of the State.

He stated that the Government is planning to install around 50 132/133 KV power stations throughout the State. Out of these, work in around 28 stations will be completed by June 2014.

Pradip Kumar Jena, Principal Secretary, Energy informed that two thermal power stations of 4000 and 3200 megawatt capacity in Sundargarh district, one at Darlipali and the other at Bhedabahal were in the pipe-line. “After these plants start functioning, our State will get around 3800 megawatt of additionally power which will help fill the gap of power shortage in the State”, he added.

Among others, Commerce and Transport Minister Subrat Tarai, Rourkela MLA Sarada Prasad Nayak, Rajya Sabha member Dillip Tirkey, GRIDCO CMD Deo Ranjan Singh, WESCO MD and other officials of the Energy department and WESCO were present in the meeting.
